MicroStation – Using Python to create a Script for a Real World Production Issue

Every now and then, your MicroStation users throw you a standards issue that looks small until you open it up then it unfolds like a bad origami project. This session walks through one such real world moment faced by our very own FLUG president, where manual cleanup would have been more that a lost weekend. Instead of suffering, we teamed up and used MicroStation’s Python tools—plus the Python AI assistant—to build a targeted fix. No Python expertise required. Just MicroStation knowledge, clear reasoning, and a willingness to iterate until the script behaved. This one hour lecture shows the entire process: how we framed the problem, guided the AI, refined the logic, and validated the results. You’ll see how a messy dataset becomes a solvable puzzle, and how Python can act as a practical extension of your MicroStation expertise rather than a new language you have to learn.
It’s not hands on, not a coding class, and not a syntax bootcamp. It’s a real case study in using modern tools to solve old fashioned production headaches—calmly (well maybe not), iteratively, and with a touch of humor (required).

Model-First Delivery for Bridges: A Practical Business Case for Structural Digital Delivery

While roadway design has largely transitioned to 3D and model-based workflows, structural design often remains rooted in traditional 2D processes. This disconnect limits coordination, reduces efficiency, and constrains the long-term value of project data across the infrastructure lifecycle.
This presentation challenges the assumption that structural modeling is only valuable when explicitly required by clients. Instead, it presents a practical, experience-based case for adopting a model-centric (model-first) approach to bridge and structural design regardless of contractual requirements. Drawing from real-world project examples, the session demonstrates how 3D modeling of structures can:
Improve production efficiency and reduce design iteration time
Streamline quantity development and reporting
Enhance interdisciplinary coordination between roadway, drainage, and structural teams
Support more effective pre-construction planning and clash detection
Provide a foundation for downstream uses, including construction and asset management

The presentation also explores common barriers to adoption such as perceived effort, client expectations, and workflow limitations, and provides practical strategies for integrating structural modeling into existing project delivery processes. Rather than focusing solely on tools or modeling techniques, this session emphasizes repeatable, project-level outcomes and highlights how model-centric structural workflows enable teams to deliver more consistent, coordinated, and future-ready infrastructure projects.

Training the Workforce for Digital Delivery *NEW*

The transition from 2D engineering plans to digital delivery of infrastructure models is rapidly accelerating within the civil engineering industry. Workforce training, rather than technology, is becoming the limiting constraint to progress. Hear from Kyle Rosenmeyer, VHB, as he shares insights from VHB’s industry leading training program to re-wire the workforce for digital delivery. Learn more about this case study from Bentley. When designers fully automate tedious tasks, visualize their design intent through models, and deliver reliable data to builders, they are having a good day. When builders can identify constructability issues faster through model review, organize resources more effectively through schedule connected digital twins, and improve production rates through automated equipment, they are having a good day. When owners can deliver a project ahead of schedule, on budget, with positive public feedback, they are having a good day.
Technology is the wave that moving our industry to digital, and just like a real wave, it is much better to ride, than swim against it. Hear from Kyle Rosenmeyer at VHB present a case study on how one organization has embraced the technology for digital delivery. In 2023 VHB initiated a model-based design training program targeted early adopters within the firm. The model-based design “coaches” received an unprecedented 100 hours of technical training focused on building 3D models with design intent, leveraging technology platforms like iTwin and ProjectWise Infrastructure Cloud, and developing strong communication skills. In two years, VHB has seen a notable increase in our workforce’s capabilities and understanding of digital delivery, widespread adoption of new ideas and the commitment to learn new skills, and increased levels of job satisfaction.
Kyle will provide an actionable plan that you can implement directly in your organization to better align it for digital delivery. FLUG is about connecting organizations to share knowledge and collectively advancing the industry and training our workforce may be the final step to fully unlocking the digital age of infrastructure.

* OpenRoads – Roundabout Modeling Part 1

Modeling roundabouts is remarkably more complicated than a traditional intersection as the geometries and components that make up the roundabout are often unique. This presentation is part of a two-part series that will undoubtedly increase your knowledge of the different geometry and modeling tools available in OpenRoads, as well as how you can plan for the inevitable changes every project faces once the model is “complete”.

A Smooth Surface: Creating and Managing Surfaces for Digital Deliverables

Building Information Modeling introduces the concepts of Level of Accuracy and Level of Development as considerations into scoping a design project. When the desired Level of Development is high enough to be designed completely in 3D, contractors and inspectors need to be able to see a model consistent with what designers created.
The LandXML file format, often used by contractors and CEIs for earthwork or pavement surfaces, creates several technical challenges for roadway designers. These surfaces are used for bidding and estimation, Automated Machine Guidance, and verification of construction quantities; therefore, creating them to be consistent with the design intent and Level of Development is important to avoid issues in construction. These surfaces are also sometimes signed and sealed as part of FDOT’s Model as a Legal Document requirement, so having consistent 3D BIM deliverables becomes particularly important to increase the Engineer of Record’s confidence in the product they are signing and sealing. This consistency also enables digital design review of the earthwork or other terrain models to be performed easily in non-CADD software such as Trimble or Topcon.
This presentation will discuss the various surfaces that might be created in the design process, such as existing subgrade, proposed finish grade, proposed subgrade, unsuitable material, subsoil excavation, surcharge, or milling. What part do Level of Accuracy and Level of Development play in determining the quality and needs for these surfaces? What workflows and techniques help designers go from corridor models (templates or assemblies) to terrains as efficiently and consistently as possible? There are certain unique challenges posed with unsuitable material and subsoil excavation terrains, so we will discuss best practices for shifting from a cross sectional approach to designating unsuitable material removal to modeling this in 3D to ultimately become a surface that can be used in earthwork calculations. Also, learn how Bentley Infrastructure Cloud can facilitate QC reviews of the 3D models.
